Dr. Sam A Kwofie
Dr. Sam A Kwofie is a retired Dentist. Sam set up a practice in Ottawa in 1971 and retired after 40 years of practice. He was a founding member and first President of the Ghana Association of Ottawa. He also served as President of the Black Canadian Scholarship Fund, for a period of 3 years. He currently, with his wife runs a family non profit foundation - ASMK FOUNDATION. The foundations objective is, making education accessible to young girls and helping small holder farmers in rural Tanzania become income producing.
John Adeyefa is the President of the African Canadian Association. He is also:
- President of the Nigerian Canadian Association Ottawa. President of Kaleidoscope World Network, a network of Non-profit charities, and humanitarian Organizations and people helping people worldwide.
- A Volunteer facilitator and Peer Leader of Chronic Diseases Self Management Workshops for Elizabeth Bruyere Hospital Ottawa and Alta Vista Manor Retirement Home.
- Professionally, a Cyber Security Consultant for the Government of Canada.
- He is the CEO of Cloud Telecom Corporation.
- Married with four boys and one girl.

José was President of the Canadian Association of Professional Employees, (CAPE), from 2005-2008; and VP from 2000-2004. CAPE is third largest Bargaining Agent/Union, about 13,000 employees composed of Economist, Statisticians, Sociologists, Translators, Interpreters, Terminologists, and Parliamentary Researchers who work for the Federal Government of Canada.
José was appointed by the Governor-In-Council (GIC – the Governor General acting on the advice of Cabinet) for three years as a Member of the Public Service Pension Advisory Committee that advises the President of Treasury Board on the administration and on other pension-related matters.
José played a major role in creating the Canadian Public Sector Quality Association (CPSQA) to influence and enhance the quality of services across all levels of Federal Government of Canada. He became its first Vice President. The CPSQA is now known as the Canadian Public Sector Excellence Network (CPSEN).
At the community level, José volunteers for many causes and has volunteered for a number of organizations in the National Capital Region (NCR) over the last 30 years, such as:
The National Capital Commission (NCC): Volunteered 9 consecutive years for NCC’s July 1st. Canada Day Celebrations and became Head of Volunteers on Parliament Hill during those years.
The City of Ottawa's Advisory Committee on Visible Minorities: José served for over 7 years on the Committee and organized the City of Ottawa’s first Employment Opportunities for Visible Minorities in National Capital Region, an event considered seminal and the first of its kind at the Municipal level in Canada.
The National Council of Ghanaian Canadians (NCGC: José established the Council in 1998 in collaboration with Ghanaians from across Canada. The objective was to provide an avenue for Ghanaian-Canadians to discuss issues of interest and concern at the national level.
The Ghanaian Association of Ottawa: As President of the Association, from 2000-2011, one of José’s significant and notable accomplishments was arranging for Canada’s Speaker of the House of Commons to recognize officially Ghana’s 50th Anniversary of Independence in the House of Commons. Historically, this was the first time any country has ever been thus recognized in Parliament in Canada.
In the Salsa Community, José organized the first Salsa Congress in Ottawa in 2000, and again, in 2001. He also organized the first Salsa performance on Parliament Hill on Canada Day Celebration, July 1, in 2001. As well, he was the first to ever organize Salsa performances, two years in a row, during Ottawa's Winterlude Celebration at Confederation Park in Ottawa.
José has retired from the Public Service of Canada and lives in Ottawa.
Phil completed a BSc. Biology and Biochemistry, he also holds a Diploma in Biochemical Technology and a Diploma in Chemical Technology from City and Guilds London. He also holds a Diploma in adult Education and Cross Cultural training. He moved to Canada on a CIDA scholarship to pursue the Biochemical Technology program. He arrived in Canada in early 1970s.
Phil. is now a retired (Biochemist) public servant from Health Canada where after working at various research facilities of Health Canada retired as a Science Learning Advisor. I have done the cultural interpretation work for various organizations as CIDA, CUSO, Teacher's Federation and World University Services overseas. Phil has been involved in various community and Union activities (Ghana Canadian Association of Ottawa, Visible minority associations of the Public Service, Health and Safety instructor etc.).
Kidane Gebremariam has a B.A. in business administration from Yarmouk University in Jordan; has Graduate Diploma in International development and cooperation from the University of Ottawa, and possesses a Master's of Social work from Carleton University.
He had worked with Health Canada for 17 years as a Senior Program Officer, Policy Coordination Officer and Program Consultant. Prior to joining Health Canada, he had worked as a Consultant with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) for more than eight years.
He has been retired since 2014. He has created his own consulting company and he undertakes some consulting work in the area of project evaluation, community development and socioeconomic research and analysis on contract basis.
Also, he has been working with the Ethiopian community in Ottawa on several projects/initiatives.
Peter, (MBA, LLM, MA) is an accomplished Human Resources Senior Portfolio Manager at Employment and Social development Canada at the Executive Leadership and Development Division. In this position, he is responsible for providing strategic advice to Deputy Ministers and Assistant Deputy Ministers in Executive Classification and Labor Relations.
Prior to his current position, Peter worked at PWGSC, Department of Justice, Veteran Affairs and Natural Resources in various capacities. He holds a Masters degree in Law (LLM) specializing in labor and Human Rights law, MBA in strategic Management and another Masters in International Affairs and International law (Syracuse University). He also holds a Postgraduate diploma in Conflict management from Algonquin College and another Postgraduate certificate in Business administration specializing in Human Resources from Wales University School of Business, UK. Peter originally acquired his two Bachelor degrees in Law and Journalism at Carleton University.
Peter was the recipient of “Professional Integrity” award in the year 2003 whilst he was at Public Works and Government Services.
Peter has been active in his professional and local community volunteering for the Government of Canada Workplace Charitable Campaign and serving as a volunteer and role model for the youth at Transforming life Youth Resource Centre, a non-profit organization that provide support to disadvantaged youths and adults in the community.
Peter is a social and political activist who believes in enhancing the rights and opportunities for the youth, women and disadvantaged in society and is a firm believer in Social Justice, Self-Determination and Pan-Africanism.
Dr. Yousif Makkawi
Dr. Makkawi is a Physician and Healthcare professional with extensive International experience. He obtained his Doctorate Degree in Kharkov, Ukraine.
He has worked and lived on four Continents in several countries, including Kharkov, Ukraine; Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; Mumbai, India; and Ottawa, Canada. He speaks, proficiently, four International Languages - English, French, Russian, and Arabic. Notably, his experiences have allowed him to easily and favorably fit in any society. Always ready, professionally and socially, to positively contribute to common benefit.
Yousif is of Sudanese origin resident in Gatineau, National Capital Region with family.
Dr. Makkawi has been actively volunteering for a number of well known organizations in the NCR, including:
- Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation
His responsibilities include delivering presentations to culturally diverse communities and groups, representing the Foundation during various community health events, and participating in various Multicultural Outreach and cancer awareness promotion in the NCR. For his contribution, Dr. Makkawi received Volunteer of the Year Award on April 12, 2016.

- Sudanese Canadian Association of Ottawa (SCAO)
As the Lead of the Board of Directors, he established guidelines for transparency and accountability for the Board, planned, and managed cultural events. He is responsible for managing the community Information Technology (IT) accounts.
- Khartoum North, Sudan
As General Physician, he established a free Clinic for the local population, provided free patient care in the evening (personal off duty time), as well as responded to emergency needs during the night in his neighbourhood. In addition, he established a Local Municipality Committee to manage the Clinic effectively and to provide free health care service.
Nzunaki Barbara Lukumbuzya
Nzunaki Barbara Lukumbuzya is of Tanzanian heritage. She has been living in Ottawa since 1976, the last posting of her diplomatic father, the late Chief Mwinamila Michael Lukumbuzya, and mother, Mrs. Corona Musegena Lukumbuzya.
She was privileged to have travelled the world and lived in New Delhi, India; Stockholm, Sweden; and Washington D.C., U.S.A. Including her vernacular Kikerewe, she speaks five languages; Kiswahili, English, Swedish and French.
For 15 years, Nzunaki worked in Ottawa for two diplomatic offices of the Republic of Zimbabwe and the Commonwealth of The Bahamas. Currently, she is a Project Officer - Occupational Health and Safety Advisor at Health Canada, a Department of the Federal Government of Canada, Ottawa.
Nzunaki has a Bachelor of Arts, Economics, from Carleton University, Ottawa; Diploma in Business Administration – Data Processing, Algonquin College; and Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, Algonquin College, Ottawa.
With her strong belief in healthy living for a healthy life, Nzunaki is passionate about exercising and eating nutritiously. Health has always been in the forefront in her life; a reason she proudly supports African Community Initiative’s effort to raise funds for CHEO so it can continue providing invaluable medical services needed to help children in the NCR live their lives to the fullest.
